Total Triage

What is Total Triage?

Getting the right CARE, from the right CLINICIAN, at the right time

Total Triage is a new way of managing care requests, where every patient contacting the practice first provides some information on the reasons for contact which is reviewed by a trained clinician before an appointment is booked. This means decisions are made based on clinical need, not just who calls first or what slots are available. This approach helps us make the most of NHS resources, improves access for everyone, and ensures your care is safe, effective, and tailored to your needs.

Total Triage helps make sure you get the right care, from the right person, at the right time—without unnecessary delays, long waits, or phone queue frustration.

What are the benefits of Total Triage?

1. Quicker Access to the Right Help

  • Not every issue needs a GP.

  • You may get a faster response from another healthcare professional (e.g. nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist).

  • Some problems can be resolved on the same day with a quick phone call or prescription.

2. Prioritises Urgent Cases

  • Requests are reviewed as they come in.

  • People with serious or urgent problems can be seen more quickly.

3. Saves You Time

  • You may not need to come into the practice.

  • Many issues can be managed by phone, video call, or secure message — no travel, no waiting room.

4. Makes the Best Use of the Whole Team

  • You may be directed to a more appropriate clinician which could include a nurse, paramedic, mental health worker, or pharmacy team.

5. Improves Safety and Continuity

  • Every request is categorised to ensure clinical need comes first

  • Where possible we will try and get you to the same clinician

6. Stop the 8am rush

  • Total triage reduces the need to contact us as soon as we open for the day, reducing the early morning rush and phone queues.

What This Means for You:

  • You still get access to your GP practice — but in a way that’s quicker, safer, and more efficient.

  • You may not always speak to a GP, but you’ll get the right care from the right clinician at the right time.
