Lifestyle & Fitness

At Clarendon Lodge we understand the importance of regular physical activity. The type and amount varies considerably based on someones health but there is nearly always a form of exercise that is safe and sustainable. There is a huge body of evidence to support physical activity being far superior to drugs in the prevention and management of numerous chronic health conditions including diabetes, stroke, heart disease and cancer.

As a practice we are committed to encouraging our patients and staff to become more physically active. We have set up a fitness club (Leamington PCN fitness club) to help promote various activities for our patients and staff. The aim of the club is to provide a platform for members to share their exercise experiences and interacting with the other members for advice and support. This can be done on any of our social media platforms (Strava, Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram).

Move it, wear it, share it, prove it

We are very proud of our fitness club & would love you to join in our free activities. Visit the links below to find out what time they happen & from where. No booking required, just turn up and you will find a warm welcome.

Hussain Al-Zubaidi

Dr Al-Zubaidi is our fitness club lead. He has a strong belief that lifestyle can be a powerful tool in the fight against many conditions both physical and mental as it is often free, while being a great way to socialise and stay connected with your community. He enjoys running, cycling and swimming. He helps run and organise fitness events at the practice. His own personal journey of taking up physical activity from a previous sedentary lifestyle has helped shaped his understanding of the benefits.

Shahnaz Hassan

I am a consultant psychiatrist at Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust and co-launched Run Talk Run to help people to get active and talk about mental health. Watch an introduction to Nordic walking video on YouTube.

Nordic Walking is a welcoming and sociable activity. It’s basically cross-country skiing, using specially adapted poles. These help to propel you forwards and intensify your walking effort.

CLMP Fitness club leader Mick Hurrell runs an organisation called Primemovers. Prime Movers promotes and runs non gym-based fitness activities for its community of men & women over 50 who want to become stronger and more active. To benefit from the improved health, wellbeing and quality of life that this brings.

Why is Nordic Walking probably the best all-in-one workout in the world?

  • When exercising with Nordic Walking, you are always improving the condition of all your major muscle groups – i.e. the fitness of your arms, back, abdomen, pelvic area and feet muscles;
  • When exercising with Nordic Walking, you are always improving the state of your respiratory and cardiovascular system – the fitness of your lungs, heart and blood vessels;
  • Using Nordic Walking poles you can perform a number of movements that will make you more agile, stronger and fitter
  • You can practise Nordic Walking wherever you wish and whenever you wish – on roads, in parks, on the beach, in the woods;
  • Nordic Walking movements are completely natural and functional – they are the same as those of normal walking;
  • Nordic Walking suits everyone and can be practised with good results by top athletes, people attracted to fitness sports and those who want to promote their health, the elderly and young people and children.

Parkrun

Parkrun Practice

Parkrun is such a simple concept: turn up every Saturday and walk, jog or run 5k, or if you’re a junior then 2k every Sunday. You can also volunteer in numerous different roles too! It doesn’t matter how fast you go. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing just as long as you are there. So go ahead and grab your trainers. What matters is taking part!

We feel parkrun is a fantastic way to stay physically and mentally well. Our local parkrun is held in Newbold Comyn. Why not join us at future runs every Saturday 9am? Click on the image below for details of the local run and how to sign up for free.

When registering why not join our fitness club. Together we can promote parkrun and other events for the community we serve! This can be done during the registration process by selecting us as your ‘running club’. If you are already a parkrun member this can be done by updating your details on logging in to your account.

We hope to develop this further in the future and look forward to your participation and support at future events.
